<p>Not a day goes by when we can&#8217;t uncover a new scientific study pointing towards the advantages of losing extra weight.  Couple this with the social pressure one feels to lose weight and look like the Hollywood types, and it is not hard to understand why there is so much interest in looking thin.</p>
<p>Health experts generally recommend eating a healthy and balanced diet to lose extra body fat.  But what exactly constitutes a healthy weight loss diet? An ideal diet for weight loss should be made up of between 45% to 65% carbohydrates, 10% to 35% protein, and 20% to 35% fat.</p>
<p>When carbohydrates are broken down in the body they take on the form of glucose.  Glucose sugar is the primary source of energy for every activity the body takes on.  Between 45% &#8212; 65% of your calories should be derived from carbohydrates.  Virtually all foods contain some amount of carbohydrates, thus the choices available can be staggering.</p>
<p>To lose weight, you should look towards more nutrient rich carbohydrate containing foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.  Foods such as colas, fruit drinks, candy, and cookies, which do not contain any significant amount of nutrients should be avoided.  These foods are often described as containing empty calories.Proteins play an equally vital role in all the body&#8217;s functions.</p>
<p>Proteins are the single largest contributor to helping our immune system and hormonal systems function.  Additionally, they are the essential building blocks for most of the bodies tissues, such as the skin, muscles, and the internal organs.  As with carbohydrates, proteins are found in nearly all foods.  However, not all protein sources are created equal.  When attempting to lose weight, you should strive to obtain the majority of your protein from foods like fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts, and lean red meat. The government recommended amount of daily protein intake is equal to roughly .35 g of protein per pound.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s not forget about fats. It may surprise you to read that the body requires 20% to 35% of its daily calories from fat. There are different types of fat, however, and you must be careful to strictly limit the types of food that contain fat varieties that pack the pounds.</p>
<p>Foods such as processed meats, butter, lard, cream, whole milk dairy products, ice cream, and many processed grain foods contain what is known as saturated fat.  Saturated fat is especially harmful to the body because it can build up in the arteries and contribute to a number of diseases. It is recommended that a mere 10% of your daily calories come from saturated fats.  Trans-fats are even more harmful.  Generally derived from foods containing hydrogenated oils (be sure to check the ingredient labels at the store) the current recommendation for intake of trans-fats is zero. To achieve the optimal balance of fat in your diet, include foods such as peanuts, walnuts, almonds, avocado, canola and olive oil, salmon and other fatty fish, and sunflower oils.</p>
<p>If you are struggling with your weight, changing to a healthy weight loss diet is perhaps the most important thing you can do. There are, however, thousands of such plans claiming to help you lose weight.  It can be a seemingly impossible task to determine which plans actually work.  But, there are, five key aspects to look for in choosing a plan that will work.</p>
<p>1.  <strong>Fundamentally Sound</strong> &#8211; A successful fat loss plan should be based upon solid science.  This doesn&#8217;t mean that a successful plan has to necessarily be at the forefront of weight-loss science, but its fundamentals must be based upon proven results.  This can be as simple as a proven strategy for cutting calories, an effective workout routine, or the incorporation of new weight loss medicine into the program.</p>
<p>2.  <strong>Proper Diet</strong> &#8211; With regards to diet, specifically, you should look for a plan that shows you how to follow a low calorie and high fiber diet.  Obviously, you want to follow a low-calorie plan.  But why high fiber?  Recent studies have confirmed that a diet high in fiber tends to fill a person up quicker than a diet low in fiber.  Therefore, when eating high fiber foods, you will become fuller quicker.</p>
<p>3.  <strong>Cardio Exercise &amp; Strength Training</strong> &#8211; A successful fat loss plan must also incorporate a properly balanced exercise routine.  Typical cardiovascular exercises, such as running, swimming, and bicycling, must be included to burn calories.  But equally important, is that a strength training routine also be part of the fat-loss program.  This is vital because muscle burns calories at a much quicker rate than fat.  If you can successfully add muscle mass to your frame, then you will be burning more calories.</p>
<p>4.  <strong>Clearly Defined Goals</strong> &#8211; Your weight loss plan should include firm planning.  Without solid goals in mind, you are almost guaranteeing failure in trying to lose weight.  Not only should goals be results oriented, such as losing a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time, but also process oriented.  For example, you would want one of your goals to focus on maintaining your planned diet for a certain amount of time.</p>
<p>5.   <strong>Motivation</strong> &#8211; A final key to a successful fat loss program is including proper motivation.  While it is true that you are the only one who can properly motivate yourself to lose weight, there are certain tools you can be equipped with to achieve that motivation.  Techniques like keeping a journal or losing weight with a group of friends can vastly improve the motivation you feel to lose weight.</p>
<p>Every successful fat loss plan is comprised of many different aspects.  However, there are a certain number of key components that you will find every successful plan uses.  Relying upon a solid scientific background, incorporating proper diet and exercise, planning with firm goals in mind, and utilizing proper motivational techniques are five such key aspects of a successful fat loss plan.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Generally speaking, your metabolism is the amount of calories your body burns every day for basic biological functions. Increasing it is a great way to accelerate arm fat burning.</p>
<p>And it&#8217;s important to note that you are never stuck with a slow or fast metabolism. In reality, your metabolism is mostly under your control. So no excuses!</p>
<p>Are you ready to take control of your metabolism? Here are 4 tips for taking your metabolism to new heights:</p>
<p>1. Exercise in the morning. If you exercise in the morning, your body will burn an extra amount of calories throughout the rest of the day-even while you sit at your desk. As an added bonus, the food you eat after your workout will most likely go to your active tissues instead of your arm fat tissues.</p>
<p>2. Exercise hard and fast. You exercise hard and fast by sweating and panting and keeping your workout under 45 minutes. You can get by with a 30 minute workout if you go hard enough. Do this and your body will go into EPOC (exercise post oxygen consumption). A state in which you burn calories up to 36 hours after exercising.</p>
<p>3. Drink small amounts of water in between meals. Your body becomes dehydrated in between meals because it uses stored water for digestion. You have to prevent this by drinking small amounts of water when you are NOT eating because dehydration slows your metabolism down.</p>
<p>4. Cut calories by very small amounts. No exceptions here. Once your caloric intake is below 80% of your needs, your metabolism will come to a screeching halt. Your body will produce fat friendly enzymes and your thyroid will decrease its output.</p>
<p>So if you think getting on a 1000-calorie diet is going to speed up fat loss, think again. This is very unhealthy and provides little benefit if at all.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s absolutely critical that you act on this information now, not later. If you do, the arm fat will start to disappear and you&#8217;ll finally be able to wear all those summer dresses collecting dust in the back of your closet.</p>

But, the truth is that when it comes to fitness there is no magic pill or diet. Complete fitness requires proper nutrition, and effective and regular exercise.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re struggling to wade between the many distractions and choices, here are some ways to get your motivation to exercise and get fit:</p>

<li>Tune out the commercial messages. Don’t pay attention to the myths, quick fixes, or whole-heartedly trust any celebrity endorsements.</li>
<li>Find a fitness plan that works. That includes proper nutrition, creating a calorie deficit, boosting your metabolism, and doing more efficient workouts. Workouts based on newer research allow you to spend less time and effort and get better results.</li>
<li>Make a commitment. Don’t hop from one program to another hoping to find that quick fix. Once you find a good program, stick with it. Success takes consistent time and effort.</li>
<li>Monitor the results you’re getting and if needed, make modifications to your plan. Eliminate what’s not working, and do more of what is producing the results you want.</li>
<li>If you want to make a big change, make lots of little changes. Don’t turn your life upside down to accommodate your fitness plan. Instead, find a way to work it into your schedule without disrupting things. Find a complete and workable fitness plan and commit to it. Track your results, and adjust as needed until you get the results you want.</li>

In other words, the type of food you eat doesn&#8217;t always determine whether or not you will lose weight!<span id="more-237"></span> Case in point: almost everyone will tell you that if you want to lose weight or avoid weight gain, you should steer clear of junk foods! But, I&#8217;m sure you know plenty of people who eat junk food to some degree and are not overweight. How do they do it?</p>
<p>It is all about controlling your food portions. If you &#8220;control&#8221; your junk food intake, say set aside one day of the week to splurge, you effectively manage the impact of junk food on your diet. For example, don&#8217;t eat fast food more than once or twice per week. Save your favorite dessert for once a week and no more than that.</p>
<p>In essence, learning to restrict your junk food intake allows you to enjoy your favorite foods without the additional headache of weight gain.</p>
<p>On a regular basis, however, you should eat five to six small and healthy meals a day, every two to three hours. For snacks avoid chips and cookies. Instead, opt for carrot sticks, raisins, an apple or even air-popped popcorn.</p>
<p>While many believe that the source of calories DOES matter when it comes to maintaining a slim body, weight maintenance is all about exercising portion control. Give your body exactly what it needs at a particular time; that way, it will never have any extra calorie left to deposit as fat and you will always be able to maintain your lean, slim figure!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The healthiest and most effective way to lose body fat is through a combination of diet and exercise.  Below are five tips to help you reduce your body fat safely and healthily.<span id="more-225"></span></p>
<p><strong>1. Keep Carbohydrate Intake High</strong></p>
<p>There is great debate as to whether high carbohydrate foods cause weight gain.  However, studies have shown that when carbohydrate is over eaten, it actually increases carbohydrate oxidation.  This means that some of the excess carbohydrate is merely burned off and effectively wasted as heat.</p>
<p>Carbohydrates are not &#8220;fattening&#8221; and are essential for ensuring maximum fuel stores for exercise.  Aim to get at least 60% of your calories from carbohydrates.  Below are some sample foods to include:</p>
<ul>
<li>all types of bread (including multi-grain, rye, cracked wheat, rolls and bagels)</li>
<li>breakfast cereals</li>
<li>dishes based on pasta, rice, oats, couscous, barley, millet</li>
<li>baked, boiled and mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes</li>
<li>beans, lentils, peas</li>
<li>starchy vegetables such as parsnips, yams, corn, plantains</li>
<li>fresh, dried and canned fruit</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>2. Cut Down &#8212; But Not Out &#8212; Fat</strong></p>
<p>Fat is the most concentrated source of calories.  It is therefore essential to reduce your intake of high fat foods.  You should include a small amount of fat &#8212; or oil &#8212; containing foods in your daily diet, preferably from vegetable sources, e.g., olive oil, sunflower oil, nuts, peanut butter and seeds.</p>
<p>Some healthy choices for fat include:</p>
<ul>
<li>very low-fat spread, peanut butter, tahini</li>
<li>grilled/boiled/baked/stir-fried foods</li>
<li>well-trimmed, lean cuts of meat</li>
<li>chicken and turkey (skinned, white meat)</li>
<li>tuna packed in water</li>
<li>pasta and rice dishes, without oily or creamy sauces</li>
<li>low-fat yogurt</li>
<li>rice pudding, fig newtons, crackers</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>3. Eat Frequent &amp; Regular Meals</strong></p>
<p>Small, regular meals and snacks help keep your blood sugar and insulin levels more stable, avoiding fluctuations in your energy level.  Your body is then assured of a more steady supply of nutrients.</p>
<p>Some healthy snacks are:</p>
<ul>
<li>sandwiches, rolls, pita bread, bagels with low-fat fillings</li>
<li> toast with honey or fruit spread</li>
<li>fresh fruit (bananas, apples, pears, grapes)</li>
<li>dried fruit (raisins, apricots, dates, apples)</li>
<li>dried fruit bars, cereal bars</li>
<li>homemade shakes made with low-fat milk, bananas and yogurt</li>
<li>baked potatoes with low-fat toppings</li>
<li>breakfast cereal with low-fat milk</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>4. Eat Breakfast</strong></p>
<p>Skipping breakfast increases your hunger later on, making you more likely to over eat at meal times or nibble on high calorie snacks.  On the other hand, eating breakfast will boost your blood sugar levels and therefore your energy levels, stimulate your metabolism and give you a significant proportion of your daily intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber and carbohydrate.</p>
<p>Breakfast meals can include:</p>
<ul>
<li>hot cereal (oatmeal, cream of wheat) made with skim or low-fat milk and served with fruit</li>
<li>whole grain cereals, plus skim or low-fat milk</li>
<li>bagel and muffins with honey, plus fresh fruit</li>
<li>whole wheat toast with fruit spread, honey, peanut butter, marmalade or jam</li>
<li>fresh fruit and dried fruit with low-fat yogurt (and nuts/seeds, if you wish)</li>
<li>poached, boiled or scrambled eggs on whole wheat toast</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>5. Avoid Overeating In The Evening</strong></p>
<p>Try to leave a couple of hours after your main evening meal before going to sleep.  Going to bed on a full stomach can make you feel uncomfortable and restless.  Also, if you eat a large meal before bedtime, most of the energy (calories) will be stored rather than used for immediate energy needs.  Quite a lot may be converted into body fat, the exact result you are attempting to avoid.</p>
<p>Done on a daily basis, these tips should lead to a long-term, balanced, healthy eating program and reduction in body fat.</p>
